Purpose of the role

To join our teaching team as a Maths, English for Academic Purposes, Business Studies, Global Studies, or Economics tutor for the NCUK International Foundation Year programme. Delivering high standard lessons to classes of up to 15 students, according to the NCUK syllabus, with focused attention on student progress and assessment. Experience teaching subjects at level 4 (Malta Matriculation Certificate) is desirable. 
BSC Education is opening a new college in Malta which will offer the NCUK International Foundation Year Programme. We will be opening this programme with a small cohort of students to start but are planning to grow the student numbers over the next two years. 
Depending on the subject the tutor is applying for, we will have anywhere from 4 hours teaching per week up (plus any related planning and administration) up to 10 hours per week for each subject.
Job Description
General Role Responsibilities
  • Teaching one or more NCUK International Foundation Year Modules (Maths for Business, English for Academic Purposes, Global Studies, Business Studies or Economics), following the appropriate NCUK syllabus, using additional material as/when required. 
  • Setting and marking formative assessments on the NCUK online system
  • Ensuring class and homework material is available for students via Google Classroom.
  • Marking summative coursework and giving timely feedback on drafts and final submissions 
  • Marking formative and summative exams on NCUK online system
  • Reporting to NCUK on exams and coursework (completing markers reports)
  • Taking part in standardisation to ensure our marking is accurate 
  • Contributing to pre-arrival subject materials 
  • Completing weekly and monthly reports on the students’ progress
  • Attending team meetings, and student meetings 
  • Providing additional material and resources to students who may require additional support 
Education & Experience Required:
  • A relevant academic qualification at UK graduate level (except Master’s Preparation Research methods teachers who must have a relevant postgraduate qualification) (Essential).
  • A recognised teaching qualification in relevant subject (Desirable). 
  • Relevant teaching experience (Essential).  Normally a minimum of two years.  This experience should relate to the delivery of a Western-style syllabus using Western conventions and methodologies.  Significant teaching/programme management experience at a reputable university may also be acceptable.
  • The ability to contribute to integrated teaching across the curriculum (Essential).
  • An understanding of UK/western higher education and the needs and requirements of international students (Essential).
  • Direct experience of further and higher education in an international context (Essential). 
  • Specific experience of education in Malta (Desirable).
  • Experience of the development of academic qualifications (Desirable).  
  • Experience of academic assessment and standards, and of quality assurance procedures (Desirable).
  • An understanding and appreciation of private sector education (Desirable).
  • Experience of living and working in Malta (Desirable).
  • Experience of teaching non-native speakers of English (Essential for EAP, Desirable for other subjects).
  • For EAP tutors, TEFLQ qualification is desirable. 

Key Skills & Competencies:
  • A record of achievement in teaching.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills including native speaker fluency in English. Numerate and articulate.
  • Competence in the effective use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT).
  • Proven planning and organisational skills and an ability to take initiative within curriculum and policy objectives.
  • The ability to contribute to study programme development.
  • The ability to set, review and mark formative and summative assessments in line with a published syllabus.
  • A record of attention to detail, thoroughness and fairness.
  • The ability to prioritise, meet deadlines, work under pressure and, when necessary, with minimal resources.
